Citizenship

To join the military, you need to be a U.S. citizen. This means you obtained your citizenship in the United States via birth in the U.S., via derivation which involves being a child of a foreign national who became a U.S. citizen before the age of 18, through acquisition which involves being a child to one parent who is a U.S. citizen before the age of 18 or through neutralization which involves one voluntarily deciding to become a U.S. citizen by choice.

If you meet the above qualifications, your chances of joining the army become high.

Age

The minimum age you can be to join the army is 17 years old. However, applicants that are 17 years old are required to have parental consent. Those below 17 years old cannot join the army.

The maximum age limit to join the army is 39 as of 2019. However, there are exceptions for older people with prior military experience. For example, you are 45 years only and you have been active for 15 years; you subtract 15 from 45 which is 30. If the number you get is less than 39, then you are eligible to join the military.

Education level

To join the military, you need to have at least a high school diploma. In case you do not have a high school diploma but have a General Education Development (GED) certificate, you can enlist, but you will be limited to some opportunities. This, however, varies in the segment you would like to pick among air force, army, coast guard, marines, or navy.

Physical medical exam

This test entails your physical well-being and functioning. You should make tests such as height, weight, vision, hearing, urine and blood tests, alcohol and substance levels, muscle and voluntary body movements tests.

These tests are done at Military Entrance Processing Stations (MEPS) under the department of defense where professionals conduct the tests to you to determine your eligibility to join the military.
